Red Cross conducts health camp

Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Manipur and Red Cross, Jiribam branch jointly conducted a one-day health camp at Gularthol community hall on Saturday.
Several people turned to check their health conditions at the camp while those above 40 years of age were checked for blood pressure, diabetes and dental conditions.
A cancer awareness campaign was also conducted as part of the camp.
Regarding the health camp, IRCS Manipur chairman Dr Y Mohen Singh said that majority of people in Jiribam consume paan (betel nut-leaf mixture) from early morning due to abundant availability of the tobacco items.
Noting that tobacco products like Khaini, Zarda and refined tobacco (Gutkha) are being consumed even by young students, he cautioned that continuation of such habit makes the youth susceptible to becoming Cancer patients after 20 years or so.
Further stating that tobacco consumption is high in Manipur as around 24 percent of the population consume it, he also explained on the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and cancer disease and appealed to people of Jiribam to avoid consumption of tobacco and related products to prevent cancer disease.
