Imphal, November 14 2023:
In a resolute effort to combat narco -terrorism and address the escalating conflict in the state, a voluntary motorcycle ride campaign, "Ride against Narco Conspiracy", took to the streets on November 12 .
The campaign, organised by The Cardinals, a touring community based in Manipur, aims to expose alleged nexus between drug cartels, illegal immigration, and recurring conflict in the state.
The ongoing conflict in the state, which began on May 3, has resulted in nearly 200 casualties, including deaths, missing persons, and displaced individuals, property destruction, numerous injuries, and widespread protests.
Beyond the immediate social repercussions, the economic and infrastructural development of the state has been severely hampered.
On the 194th day of the conflict, participants embarked on a journey starting from Kangla Gate and concluding at Kakching Lam khai, after passing through key landmarks such as Sana Konung, Marjing Polo Complex, and Khongjom War Memorial Complex.
Displaying handheld placards, stickers, flags, and banners, 18 bikers and five pillion riders raised their voices against the narco-conspiracy leaguing the state.
The root cause of the conflict, as highlighted by the campaign, is infiltration of illegal immigrants and drug traffickers across the Indo-Myanmar border.
The arrest of Myanmar nationals possessing fake Indian documents such as Aadhaar Cards, underscores the gravity of the situation.
Many of these individuals are currently detained in Manipur Central Jail, Sajlwa, Imphal.
Fuelled by funds from drug cartels, the illicit activities include deforestation, chemical pollution of the soil, poppy cultivation, narcotics production, arms procurement, and warfare against the host country, India.
Despite the Ministry of Home Affairs' assurance of a 100 km advanced smart fencing system along the Myanmar border, concerns persist over the effectiveness of sealing the entire 1,643 km border, which traverses Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram.
The media report indicates that while 1,472 km of border demarcation has been completed, a significant portion remains unsealed.
To counter the threats posed by foreign militia, the campaign emphasises the need for the Government of India to intensify efforts to secure and monitor these border regions comprehensively.
Addressing the environmental impact, the campaign advocates for environmental friendly alternatives to replace poppy cultivation in the hills of Manipur and Northeast India.
This approach seeks to tackle the issue at its roots and offer sustainable solutions.
The success of the campaign was made possible through the support of Manipur Police and Traffic Control Police, who ensured smooth passage through the bustling Imphal City traffic.
