MLA Rameshwar calls for promoting handloom for economic growth

Observing that the 14-month long crisis has severely impacted the state's economy, Keirao MLA L Rameshwar has called for promoting handloom sector to spur economic growth.
The MLA was distributing traditional looms, solar panels and solar lamps to weavers of Meitei Lamkhai under Keirao assembly constituency as part of the second phase of socio-economic enhancement campaign taken up under MANITEX programme.
Interacting with media during the distribution programme held on Saturday, Rameshwar said that Keirao has substantial number of weavers and villages like Langdum, Keirao, Kyamgei, Arapti, Urup and Sandrok are known for their hard work in the sector.
As a result, 750 weavers were selected for providing handloom inputs under MANITEX programme, he said, while appreciating the recognition.
He further said that out of the Rs 1.2 lakh financial assistance for construction of handloom work sheds, first instalment of Rs 60,000 had been credited info the bank accounts of the weavers.
Weavers in the constituency have been able to earn Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 per month empowering them to contribute in supporting their families, he said.
He also maintained that handloom is next to agriculture in the state's socio-economic sector, and called for promoting the sector to spur further economic growth.
