Imphal, January 02 2024:
With an aim to prevent communal tension and violence in Wangkhei area which is settled by different communities, a meeting of representatives of different communities including the Meitei Pangals was held under the aegis of Peace Committee, Wangkhei Kendra at Soibam Leikai Citizens' Club on Monday.
Addressing media persons at Citizens' Club on Tuesday, Meitei Pangal Council Manipur president Haji Arafat Ali said that the Monday's incident at Lilong in which four people lost their lives and around 14 sustained injuries was very unfortunate.
It was not a communal incident between the Meeteis and Meitei Pangals.
Those involved in the act should be brought to justice according to the laws of the land and people should not post uncorroborated comments on social media and add communal tone to the incident, he stressed.
Noting that hate comments were posted on the social media immediately after the incident, he said that Wangkhei being a place inhibited by different communities, there was suspicion that unwanted incidents could break out and as such a meeting was convened on Monday night under the initiative of Wangkhei Kendra Peace Committee to prevent unwanted incidents from happening in Wangkhei area.
The meeting also unanimously resolved to take all necessary measures to prevent all kinds of unwanted incidents.
Peace Committee chairman RK Gokulchandra said that the state is currently reeling under crisis and no one should fan communal hatred and violence in the state.
Everyone should understand that one false propaganda could lead to serious consequences to the already tense situation, he cautioned.
The chairman also regretted that amid the people, meira paibis, clubs and organisations striving to restore peace in the state, some organisations are involved in slapping monetary demands on the minority communities in the state.
He, thus, appealed all concerned to desist from such demands.
