Imphal, December 19 2021:
Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union (MTU) has called for a political will regarding protection and preservation of culture and make it a major issue in the upcoming assembly election.
In a release, MTU cultural affairs secretary Ch Parihal Meitei said that despite the richness in art and culture of Manipur, the massive wave of globalisation has drastically hit it as people could not preserve the rich art and culture properly.
While stating that MTU is concerned about the cultural policy framed by the state government but could not implement the same till now, Parihal highlighted the need to examine the activities done by Manipur University of Culture for development and promotion of art and culture since its inception.
The wish of the union is to make a clear ethnographic account of indigenous Meetei community that clearly dissects the indigenous culture and tradition from the assimilated one.
There would only be a few communities in the world including Meetei that showcase ritualistic dances, songs and costumes without considering the time and place just for the sake of welcoming higher ups from outside the states and in functions, he contended- The secretary further said that MTU will join hands with the people in formulation of long term policies that will ensure preservation of culture and tradition and handing over it to the next generations after thoroughly examining the social changes .
