Imphal, December 09 2024:
The North East Students' Organisation (NESO), comprising eight student bodies from the north-eastern states has declared December 11 as Black Day for the North East.
"The date marks the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 by the Rajya Sabha despite relentless opposition from the indigenous peoples of the North East," said NESO in a statement, contending that the legislation is a political injustice perpetrated by the Government of India against the indigenous communities.
To mark this observance, NESO has decided to display black flags and black banners in all important places across the seven North Eastern states on December 11 .
"This action is meant to send a clear message to the Government of India expressing opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 and to remind the people of the region about the injustice inflicted upon them".
NESO then called upon all the people of the North East to support the observance and continue fighting for their just cause, which it described as a God-given right.
