Kakching, September 08 2022:
Chandel Forest Division under the sponsorship of Manipur Biodiversity Board organised an awareness programme on biodiversity conservation at Maha Union Higher Secondary School, Japhou, Chandel district headquarters on Thursday.
The awareness programme was attended by Divisional Forest Chandel assistant conservator of forest Naorem Munal Meitei, United College, Lambung Botany department assistant professor Dr Mohd Mustaque Ahamad and School principal Y Surendro Singh as resource persons.
Speaking at the programme, N Munal pointed out that the awareness programme is being conducted at Maha Union Higher Secondary School as a part of International Day of Biodiversity observance.
A school in each of the 16 districts of Manipur has been selected for organising such programmes.
Highlighting the harmful effects of using plastics in the environment, he informed that plastic take 300 1000 years to decompose.
The plastics used in one hour could cover the earth seven times.
The pollution caused by plastic not only pollutes the environment but also gives tremendous impact on the diversity leading to global warming and climate change among others, he explained.
Pointing out that numerous indigenous fish species have gone extinct, Munal said that many migratory birds do not flock to the state today due to change in climatic conditions.
While urging all to conserve forest and environment and make a plastic free state, he exhorted to stop killing wild birds and animals and further appealed to the gov-ernment for proper monitoring of issuing gun license to people in hill areas.
The Loktak Lake has helped a lot in maintaining ecological balance and climatic condition.
However, due to construction of Ithai Barrage, the biodiversity of the lake and the rivers that flow in it have been drastically affected.
So, it is the responsibility of everyone to preserve the fresh water lake.
In addition to it, massive deforestation for poppy cultivation affected our environment, he maintained.
The awareness programme was attended by students, teachers and staffers of forest department.
