Imphal, June 08 2022:
All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has remarked that it was unfortunate and embarrassing for the state to have the Likhru bridge still unrepaired, despite the bridge earning the infamy of being the truckers' grave.
A statement released by AITUC general secretary L Sotinkumar conveyed that heavy rain in May inundated most of the rivers.
On May 12, a truck loaded with wheat fell from Likhru bridge which has no side railing, re suiting in the death of both the driver and the handyman.
Amidst Senapati Drivers' Union and Manipur Road Transporter Union's pleas for repairing the bridge at the earliest, another truck carrying cement fell from the bridge on May 15, killing the handyman while the driver remained missing.
Frustrated, both the Unions threatened to shut down Imphal-Dimapur road but were assured by the MLA of Mao that the bridge would be repaired and as such, the proposed shutdown was withdrawn.
However, another truck carrying cement met accident at the same bridge on June 7 around 8 am, leaving both the driver and handyman injured.
All these unfortunate incidents have happened as the state government did not act in time.
Thus, AITUC urged for repairing the bridge at the earliest and to extend compensation to the families of the deceased driver and handyman.
The Committee also urged the state government to bear the medical expenses for the injured driver and handyman.
