Imphal, August 06 2024:
For the second time this month, Loktak Development Authority (LDA) on Tuesday delivered essential items to residents of Champu Khangpok floating village, which remained cut off from the rest of the water body for over two weeks after by thick volume of phumdis (floating vegetation) swept by strong winds encircled the village.
The supplies, including food and medicines, were handed over to the villagers by LDA officials led by superintending engineer Ng Sanajaoba Meetei and project coordinator RK Keshokumar Singh, providing much-needed relief to the villagers, who rely on fishing as their primary source of livelihood.
In addition to delivering the supplies, LDA is exploring means to clear the phumdis surrounding the village so as to restore access and enable the community to resume their daily activities, in collaboration with Bishnupur DC Lourembam Bikram.
According to the officials, LDA continues to prioritise the conservation of Loktak Lake while ensuring the welfare of the communities that depend on it, under the leadership of CM Biren and LDA chairman Asnikumar Moirangthem, to maintain balance between ecological preservation and well-being of the local population.
