World Soil Day observed at Chandel, Ukhrul

Chandel Forest Division observed World Soil Day with an awareness programme at Koinonia Training School, Chandel district.
The awareness programme was graced by Divisional Forest Officer, Chandel, Dr N Munal Meitei as chief guest and Headmaster of Koinonia School, TS Bahadur as president and was attended by around 75 students including faculty members and staff of the school.
Speaking at the event, Dr N Munal stressed on the importance of soil in balancing the ecosystem.
He continued that soil not only purifies water but also plays an important factor in tackling the pollution by capturing carbon dioxide.
Around 60% of the world's rainwater is absorbed by the soil which is much more than the lakes and rivers of the world and helps combat floods and droughts.
He further added that soil produces more than 95% of food products in the world and also helps in producing penicillin and other medicines.
"To make a 1cm of soil it took more than 100 years, but when human beings started realising the benefits of soil, more than 60% of the soil has been lost", therefore, we must protect and safeguard the soil and forest by planting more trees and practicing crop rotation, added Munal.
Meanwhile, under the initiative of ICAR Manipur Centre and Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI) Zone VII, KVK Ukhrul observed World Soil Day at Langdeng Village, Ukhrul district today.
The programme was graced by Head in Charge of KVK Ukhrul, Dr Soibam Khogen, SMS, PA Ramsen, Soil Conservation Officer, Dept of Horticulture and Soil Conservation Thuimaya Kashung, Chief of Langdeng village, AS Wungmaso as presidium members.
Speaking at the event, Dr PA Ramsen stressed on the objective of celebrating World Soil Day and the benefits of maintaining healthy soil.
A total number of 48 farmers attended the programme.
Later winter crop seeds and soil health cards were distributed to the farmers.
