Imphal, August 02 2024:
Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has called on the Central government to expedite the infrastructure and related construction work for the National Sports University (NSU) being established at Koutruk, Imphal West.
Speaking during the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, the MP emphasised the importance of the University for the sportspersons of Manipur and the nation.
Highlighting the historic decision to establish India's first National Sports University in Manipur, MP Sanajaoba noted that the move recognised the significant contributions of players from the state in the fields of sports.
The NSU Bill, introduced by the Prime Minister in 2017, was passed by Parliament in 2018, marking a milestone in the country's commitment to sports development.
However, MP Sanajaoba expressed concern over the sluggish pace of construction, pointing out that progress has been minimal despite the passage of several years.
While acknowledging that there may be various reasons for the delay, he urged the government to prioritise and accelerate the construction work in the interest of sportspersons.
Drawing attention of the Prime Minister and the ministers concerned, MP Sanajaoba stressed the need for swift action to ensure that the National Sports University is completed and made operational as soon as possible, providing world-class facilities and opportunities for athletes from across the country.
