Imphal, February 01 2023:
Loktak Development Authority observed World Wetland Day along with taking out a Manipur Pony Rally from Iroisemba to Hiyangthang area under the theme "Save Nanibul, Save Loktak", on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occa7 sion, Minister Govindas Konthoujam urged all concerned to take up proactive role in saving Loktak Lake instead of just verbalising it.
"We must all remember that in sync with rise in pollution level of Nambul river the pollution level of Loktak Lake too increases, not to mention of the huge impact on the ecological imbalance of the state, he remarked.
He then informed that efforts are being made to plant more trees this year compared to last year.
As the people in Imphal continue to face water shortage due to drying up of Singda dam, steps have been taken up to supply water to the masses from Thoubal river.
If the deforestation is to be carried out in an unchecked manner, similar issues will continue to occur in the future, he cautioned.
Regarding the rally, the Minister said that the state government has taken up many measures to safeguard and preserve the Pony (horse) of the state.
As such, we can now see horse-mounted police personnel, in action, he said, while adding that the state's unique horse will continue to be protected at all cost.
In his speech, Moirangthem Asnikumar pointed out that Loktak Lake is an important asset of Manipur and wished the rally would bring more enlightenment on the matter amongst the masses.
The programme was also attended by MLAs RK Imo and Kh Raghumani among others.
