Seminar empowers women against substance abuse

A one-day seminar on "Empowering Women: Combating Substance Abuse in Manipur", organised by the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) and sponsored by the National Commission for Women (NCW), was held at the DM College of Teacher Education (DMCTE), Jubilee Hall, here on Tuesday.
The seminar was attended by MSCW chairperson Thumlip Tiningpham Mon-sang, members Lourembam Dayabati and T Chuongsin Koireng, member secretary W Phajatombi, and DMCTE principal RK Lokendra, besides 100-plus students of the college.
Speaking at the inaugural session, chairperson Thumlip Monsang highlighted that the seminar aims to raise awareness and disseminate information on the menace of substance abuse.
Expressing hope that the participating students would serve as messengers to spread awareness throughout Manipuri society, and emphasising the significant role of women in society, she said empowering women is vital to development of families and communities, as women serve as the backbone of both.
Thumlip also highlighted the role of MSCW in combating the menace of substance abuse, which remains a major societal challenge, and encouraged everyone to work together to save the youth from drug addiction and protect society.
During the technical session, Meitei Leimarol Sinnai Shang, Khoyathong secretary SC Inaocha delivered a lecture on "Dealing with Women with Substance Abuse: Genesis, Success Stories, and Challenges," while regional coordinator at the Regional Resource Coordinating Centre, Department of Psychiatry, RIMS, Th Indira spoke on the causes and psychological impacts of "Substance Abuse and Women".
Other speakers who made presentations included Nirvana Foundation founder Sobhana Sorokhaibam on "Substance Abuse and Women: Its Causes and Impact on Society"; Anouba Mangai Trust Centre's project coordinator and vocational counsellor Hijam Kishorechand on "Rehabilitating Women with Substance Abuse: Vulnerability, Victimisation, and Challenges of Institutional Care"; National Coalition of People Living with HIV (NCPI+) monitoring and evaluation officer L Ranja-na on "Drug Abuse among Women in Northeast India"; and RIMS department of psychiatry Prof Dr RK Lenin on "Drug Abuse and Its Impact on Families" .
