Online legal awareness programme organised

District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Imphal West organised an online legal awareness programme via Jitsi Meet application on Thursday.
The programme, which was held to discuss the judgment of the Supreme Court on arrest and detention of an accused, was attended by District and Sessions Judge, Imphal West Aribam Guneshwar, CJM-Imphal West Yengkhom Somorjit, JMIC-Imphal West-I Laishram Rina, JMIC-Imphal West-II M Hiralata, trainee judicial officers, SP Imphal West K Megha'chandra; Additional SP (Law and order) Th Shankar Deva, and SDPOs and IOs of the district police.
Speaking at the event, Aribam Guneshwar explained that if the police want to arrest someone, they should satisfy the reason for the arrest, the necessity for the arrest and the benefit of arresting the accused.
The Magistrate, who will be giving the detention order, should also be satisfied with the report submitted by the IO of a case under Section (l) (B) (2) of CrPC.
He then said that the judgment passed by the SC was done so with the aim of reducing jail population to curb the spread of the pandemic.
On the other hand, DLSA Imphal East organised a webinar on the ruling of the SC on Thursday.
The webinar was attended by DLSA Imphal East chairman Rk Memcha, judicial magistrates of the district and police personnel of Andro PS.
