AMSU submits 12-point memo to Education Minister

All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) submitted a 12-point charter of demands to improve quality of education in the state to the education minister Thounaojam Basanta on Tuesday.
In the memorandum, AMSU demanded to increase budget allocation for education sector to improve infrastructure of educational institutions, regular appointment of registrar and controller for Dhanamanjuri University and to vest the rightful power to the VC in order to enable him to take necessary efforts to ensure a decent academic atmosphere.
The union demanded the minister to implement Manipur Private School Registration and Regulation Act 2017 and make a proper guideline; fill up long-vacant position of SCERT director; fill up long-vacant positions of regular principal and headmasters of government colleges and schools and take up school rationalisation measures to maintain a proportionate teacher-student ratio.
The Union further demanded the government to stop the current utilisation system of teachers; replace bureaucrat officers, who hold in-charge posts of administration in the different educational institutes by professionals with academic background; introduce more inter-district public transport services to provide an affordable transport service to students as private passenger vehicles are unwilling to take students as passengers considering the half fare they get; solve unemployment issue to some extent by opening skill development and vocational training courses in various colleges; and establishment of more community colleges.
AMSU further demanded the state government to take up necessary steps in order to instil Manipuri nationalism among the upcoming generation by ensuring singing of the state song up to high school level as a part of education and to print the state song on the back cover of the books prescribed by BSEM.
Mentioning about the present scenario of global climate change, the union also demanded the education minister to introduce a policy and programme on afforestation for students from junior high school to higher secondary level and making it mandatory as a part of environmental education.
