Imphal, July 23 2024:
The Joint Students' Coordination Committee (JSCC) has asked authorities concerned to replace the incumbent BSEM secretary with a qualified candidate from among those in teaching profession who had previously underwent recruitment process, by July 29.Addressing media persons at the Kwakeithel office of MSF, here, on Tuesday, JSCC spokesperson Ningthoujam Dhanakumar Meitei contended that instead of developing the education sector, authorities are appointing officers from the education department based on personal connections rather than on merit, thus, leading to underdevelopment of the education sector in the state.
Earlier, officials of BSEM and CoHSEM were recruited from amongst the qualified candidates in the teaching profession.
JSCC has also been urging the government not to appoint bureaucrats in this sector, recalled the spokespersons.
Regardless of the general sentiment and stand of the JSCC, the appointment additional director of Education (S) T Geetchandra Sharma, as the BSEM secretary merits criticism Dhanakumar maintained and alleged that Geetchandra's name figured in a corrupt case in 2017 .
As such, appointing such a person as secretary of BSEM is unacceptable, as the position requires full dedication to official duties, which is incompatible with his current role as Additional Director of Education (S), he said.
JSCC had also submitted a written application to the chief minister and the education minister on May 7, urging replacement of Geetchandra with qualified candidate from the teaching profession, Dhanakumar recounted, while adding that the education minister has not yet given time to meet with them, which is highly concerning, and accused him of being an incompetent and irresponsible minister.
He reiterated that the current BSEM secretary should be replaced by a qualified candidate from the teaching profession previously involved in the recruitment process by July 29.Any unwanted incident arising out of non-compliance to the proposal should be the sole responsibility of the education minister, he said.
