"Pukpha Ngai" fest celebrated in Tamenglong

Tamenglong, July 21 2014:
With the aim to preserve the age old traditional practices of their forefathers, Tamenglong people celebrated "Pukpha Ngai", a pre- harvest festival at Happy Villa, Tamenglong ward No.IV on Friday with Chiulongamang, an elder, as the presiding high priest.
The observance was organised by Zeliangrong Pui Customary Research Society Tamenglong.
On the occasion, the high priest prayed to Almighty God for abundant harvest of food grains this year.
Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao in connection with the celebration, Ngamthuiyang Pamei, Chairman Zeliangrong Pui Customary Research Society Tamenglong said that the old customs and traditional practices of the forefathers are dying and so the observance aims to preserve and promote the old tradition and custom.
He recalled that on the occasion of "Pukpha Ngai" festival the whole villagers used to involve in mass social work like making road connecting to their fields in ancient time.
During the mass social work, the men folks would shout "ho- hoing" while cleaning jungle/ making the road.
They ate together and shared their foods, rice beers, etc.
during lunch time and continue with their work till completion of the road, Ngamthuiyang said, while lamenting that this good tradition is dying today.
