Imphal, July 18 2022: A one day sensitization cum workshop for supervisors on POCSO Act, adoption .

regulations and prohibition of Child Marriage Act was held today at the Imperial hall of Classic Grande, Chingmeirong.

While presenting the inaugural speech, Joint Director (ICDS), Social Welfare, Govt of Manipur, Bantee Singh Konthoujam highlighted the importance of raising awareness among the parents in particular about the Protection of Child from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act, 2012) inorder to prevent their children from falling prey to any form of sexual offences.

In view of the rising cases of sexual crime among the young girls where the sexual offenders are the family members, friends or relatives of the victim, Bantee Singh stressed on the need to sensitize about POCSO Act from the grassroots level.

He also maintained there has been instances when the provisions of the Act have been misused and violated by many just for mere personal gains and regarded such acts as really unfortunate since POCSO Act has been implemented to protect children from all forms of sexual crimes.

With regard to child adoption, he stated that the adoption process was easy and simple since a child could be adopted by contacting the Social Welfare Department along with the approval from the Family Court, however the rules and regulations have changed considerably over the years.

He also expressed the desire to give more preference to children from the State so that the adopted children do not face any major problems in the future.

District Child Protection Officer, District Child Protection Unit, Imphal West, Yurembam Indramani underscored the role of the supervisors in spreading awareness among the public on POCSO Act to have a far reaching effect which will in turn help in reducing sexual offences in young girls.

During the technical session, experts and resource persons spoke on topics in line with today's programme.

Later a discussion session was also held.
