3-day EDP on 'aquaponic' underway

A three-day training cum capacity building on 'Entrepreneurship Development through Aquaponics' - jointly organised by Zoology Department of Manipur University and Vikas Parishad under the sponsorship of ICAR Directorate of Cold water Fisheries Research (DCFR), Bhimtal - commenced on Tuesday at the court hall of the University.
Manipur University vice-chancellor Prof N Lokendra and ICAR DCFR director Dr Pramod Kumar Pandey attended the inaugural function as chief guest and president respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof N Lokendra hailed the initiative of the Zoology Department in collaboration with ICAR DCFR experts, stating that it will benefit farmers and boost fish production.
Considering the fish consumption rate of the state, boosting local fish production will help the socio-economic condition of the state to a great extent, he said, while highlighting benefits of aquaponics for fish farmers.
Altogether 25 select fish farmers are participating in the training programme.
A handbook on Aquatic Microbiology edited by Dr Pramod Kumar Pandey, Sumanta Kumar Mallic and Dr Rameshori Yumnam, and published by CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group, was also released on the occasion.
Former vice-chancellor of Central Agricultural University, Prof M Premjit, MU School of Life Sciences dean Prof Debananda Ningthou -jam and MU Botany Department head Prof Kananbala Sarangthem were also present at the event as guests of honour.
