Zoonotic accounts for 30 pc of 200 CD: Surveillance officer

The World Zoonosis Day 2024 was observed under the joint aegis of District Health Society, Thoubal and District Surveillance Unit, Thoubal, on Monday.
The World Zoonosis day is observed to create awareness amongst people about zoonotic diseases that are transmitted from animals to humans and shape into major global threat to public health and animal welfare.
Held under the theme "One World, One Health: Prevent Zoonosis", the observance was attended by IDSP, NHM Manipur state surveillance officer Dr S Gopal Singh and Thoubal CMO Dr Y Nokul Singh as chief guest and president respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Gopal informed that out of the 200 communicable diseases, 60 are zoonotic, including COVID-19, Monkeypox, and Dengue.
He mentioned that the number of dengue cases in the state has reached 2173, also adding that this year, 10 deaths have been reported due to dog bites, including one case in Thoubal.
Reflecting on India's goal of achieving zero rabies-related deaths by 2030, he further stressed the importance of collaboration and coordination among various departments and stakeholders to meet this target.
Veterinary Department joint director Dr P Gojendro Singh, Thoubal district leprosy officer Dr M Nomita Devi and Thoubal district surveillance officer Dr L Lalitkumar Singh also attended the event the guests of honour.
