CCpur holds road safety meeting to prevent accidents

In response to the increasing number of road accidents, the district administration of Churachandpur convened a District Road Safety Committee meeting on Tuesday at the Mini-Secretariat Conference Hall, Tuibong, here.
The meeting aims to raise awareness and implement preventive measures to reduce accident-related fatalities within the district.
Presiding over the meeting, deputy commissioner Dharun Kumar S urged government officials and civil organisations to collaborate in disseminating road safety information and promoting responsible road user behaviour.
He emphasised the need for coordinated efforts to minimise the number of road accident fatalities and injuries in the district.
He also highlighted ongoing initiatives to enhance the safety of road users.
During the meeting, the chief medical officer provided an overview of emergency response and accident management, focusing on strengthening first-responder capabilities and assessing ambulance and trauma care facilities.
She reported that from October 2024 to February 2025, the district recorded 50 accident-related casualties.
Specifically, there were six casualties due to hit-and-run incidents between October 2024 and January 2025, with an additional seven cases reported between January 5 and February 10, 2025 .
The general manager of NHIDCL, PMU Churachandpur, presented an assessment of road conditions, maintenance efforts, and preventive measures such as speed breakers, signage, and pedestrian crossings.
He also provided an overview of the Churachandpur to Tuivai Road (NH-102B) project and discussed key road safety Objectives under PMU Churachandpur, including the identification and mitigation of accident-prone areas (black spots).
His presentation covered statistical data, major causes of accidents, vehicle user responsibilities; pedestrian safety, and traffic signage regulations.
The superintendent of police, meanwhile, stressed the importance of identifying high-risk zones and strengthening traffic regulations and enforcement mechanisms.
He addressed challenges faced in enforcing traffic laws and proposed strategies to enhance road Safety, On the other-hand, additional deputy commissioner Thangboi Gangte elaborated on compensatory schemes for hit-and-run victims.
He outlined the compensation process, including the required inquiries, final orders, and claim settlements.
He also detailed the eligibility Criteria, compensation amounts, necessary documentation (such as bank account details, ID and address proof, FIR, and death certificate), and refund policies.
The meeting concluded with discussions from co opted members, who shared their perspectives on road safety and proposed constructive recommendations for accident prevention.
Attendees included village chiefs, representatives from philanthropic and student organisations, church leaders, and members of the District Consumers', Club.
