Awareness campaign on water birds held

Imphal, January 09 2025:
A day-long awareness campaign on water birds was organised by Loktak Development Authority (LDA) and Forest Department in collaboration with Environmental Social Reformation, Sangai Protection Forum, United Clubs of Thanga and ARICA, Thanga Chingkha at Hill Thanga-1 on Wednesday.
Speaking at the event, LDA chairman M Asnikumar highlighted that the migratory water birds of Loktak Lake are not only an integral part of the ecosystem but also has deep roots with the traditions and heritage of Manipur.
He also pointed out that presence of these birds serve as an indicator about the ecological health of water bodies in particular and the state in general.
The chairman also acknowledged the role of the local communities in preserving the Loktak Lake and urged the public to contribute their mite in maintaining the lake's ecological balance as personal responsibility and duty.
He also stressed the importance of making the lake a peaceful habitat for both birds and animals.
Among others, the campaign was also attended by water bird conservationist K Jugeshore Singh, national awardee and UCT president Oinam Maipa kchao Singh, Sangai Protection Forum president Dr N Yaima Singh, Moirang Forest Range officer H Geetchandra Sharma, Bishnupur DFO, officials of LDA and Forest department and representatives of local bodies.
