State second in NE in tax revenue contribution

Among the north eastern states, Manipur is also one of the major contributors to tax revenue of the country, informed Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, North Eastern Region, (Guwahati) Chaitali Panmei.
Delivering the key note of a seminar cum outreach programme organised by the Income Tax office, Guwahati at Classic Grande in Chingmeirong, on Tuesday, Chaitali Panmei stated that among the north eastern states, Assam has highest economic activities and contributes highest tax revenue to the country, followed by Manipur.
Despite facing unrest situation since May 3 last year, the state continued to make significant progress in development activities, he said while adding that entrepreneurs, businessmen and skilled individuals are working tirelessly and demonstrating remarkable resilience that deserves commendation.
The northeastern states contribute approximately Rs 10 crore annually in revenue, marking a significant milestone for the region.
However, this amount remains relatively low compared to other states like Karnataka which contributes Rs 230,000 crore to the national revenue, Panmei elaborated, and stressed the need for progressive development in the northeastern region to enhance its contributions.
He also noted that the seminar and outreach programme aims to primarily educate participants about the new tax regime set to be implemented in the country.
Feedback and suggestions from stakeholders will be communicated to the relevant authorities at the centre, said the income tax officer.
Classic Group of Hotels managing director Dr Thangjam Dhabali Singh, who was also present as one of the presidium members, expressed appreciation for conducting the programme on the new tax regime, and noted opportunity such initiatives provide for discussion by the taxpayers.
He noted that the crisis in the state lingering for over 17 months has severely impacted the business community and created serious obstacles to entrepreneurs.
Additionally, frequent internet shutdowns hindered e-payment and e-filing processes, said Dr Dhabali and urged the relevant authorities to consider waiving taxes for taxpayers, particularly within the business community, through a special provision.
The function was also attended by Manipur Chamber of Commerce secretary Haorokcham Anil, JNBA president KR Anish and Thangjam Agro company proprietor Thangjam Joykumar Singh as presidium members, besides chartered accountants, tax professionals and leading business figures, including top taxpayers of the state.
