Arrest of ex-councillor sparks protest at Heirok Keithel

Denouncing the arrest of Heirok Municipal Council former vice-chairperson Thokchom Birjit of Heirok Part-ll by Imphal West Cyber Crime police, local Meira Paibi, Heirok Apunba Lup and FINE Society Club on Friday blocked road and protested at Heirok Keithel demanding unconditional release of the ex-councillor.
The protestors marched towards Heirok police station and submitted a memorandum addressed to Thoubal SP and furthermore they rallied up to Thoubal DC complex and submitted memorandum to the DC.
The protestors held placards inscribed 'We condemn arrest of Birjit', 'We denounce arresting innocent people' and 'Release Birjit unconditionally' among others.
According to FINE Society Club general secretary Ningthoujam Sanatomba, Birjit is innocent and should be released immediately.
Suspecting that the arrest might be related to a Facebook post shared by Birjit, Sanatomba questioned whether there is no freedom of speech and expression, which is guaranteed by the Constitution of India to its citizens.
Further posing if there is no law in the land, he cautioned of launching intense protest if Birjit is not released.
The memorandum denounced arrest of Birjit without issuing summon and also condemned detention of person without giving prior information to police station concerned along with demanding unconditional release of Th Birjit.
