Rajya Sabha MP Leisemba Sanajaoba has raised a motion in the Parliament today for a Centrally sponsored pony project in Manipur for the preservation of this endangered rare breed.
Raising it as a 'special motion' at the ongoing monsoon session of the Parliament, the Rajya Sabha MP appealed for a centrally sponsored pony project in Manipur similar, to Tiger Project to safeguard and promote the Manipuri pony.
While placing the appeal, the MP stated that it is a well known historical fact that Manipur is the birth place of the internationally famed modem Polo Game which was known to many of the British Officers as Manipuri hockey on horseback'.
He went on to inform that Manipuri Pony which is used in the game Sagol Kangjei (Manipuri Hockey on horseback) and was also used in warfare by the Manipuris is a rare breed which is extremely agile and tough is becoming endangered due to the lack of grazing ground and a well planned pony farm.
Expressing that the State Government has been putting its best effort to preserve Manipuri Pony, the MP said that due to paucity of funds, it has become a difficult task.
Therefore to save Manipuri pony from extinction, the Rajya Sabha MP requested the Government to initiate a centrally sponsored pony project in Manipur.
