Imphal, January 19 2022:
Manipur Nupi Marup has urged the authorities concerned to take up necessary measures to ensure the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections, scheduled on February 27 and March 3, is held in a free and fair manner.
In a statement released to the press, the women's organisation expressed serious concern that incidents of poll violence occurred in the valley areas even before the announcement of the election schedule.
The occurrence of such incidents could be attributed to delayed action on part of the police stations concerned in apprehending the people perpetrating violence and punishing them as per the law of the land.
As such, the people can only suspect that the police stations are delaying action due to the powerful connections of the people involved.
If such actions were to continue, the upcoming polls cannot be conducted in a free and fair manner, it remarked.
Thus, the Chief Electoral Officer needs to take up strict measures to ensure the people are able to exercise their right to vote, which comes after every 5 years, in a free and fair manner.
Moreover, police officers, who are protecting culprits with powerful connections, should be identified and strict disciplinary action should be initiated, thv; body demanded.
