Thoubal, December 17 2024:
P Lilika, wife of Pukhrambam Gopin (35), who is currently in police custody for his alleged involvement in the destruction of Kakching MLA Rameshwar's residence amid the public outrage following the abduction and murder of six children and women by Kuki militants in Jiribam, has expressed deep disappointment that her husband was denied the opportunity to attend his father's last rites.
Speaking to reporters near Thoubal Court complex on Monday, Lilika explained that the residence of MLA Rameshwar was destroyed by an angry mob following the brutal killing of women and children by armed Kuki militants.
In connection with the incident, her husband, a member of Langsai Thouna, was arrested, charged with involvement and lodged in Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa.
Lilika recalled that Go-pin's arrest shocked his father Gopal, who suffered stroke and passed away around 4 am on Monday.
She expressed deep disappointment that the court denied her husband permission to attend his father's funeral.
Naorem Jugeshwar, who was also present at the press briefing, stated that on November 16, an irate mob attacked the residence of MLA Rameshwar, after which the police turned their focus to Langsai Thouna, arresting its members, including the convenor.
Jugeshwar clarified that during the incident, members of Langsai Thouna were in Kakching.
The Kakching SP had called the convenor of Langsai Thouna, requesting that they intervene and calm the mob, destroying the MLA's residence.
Following this, the members of Langsai Thouna proceeded toward the MLA's house.
Jugeshwar further maintained that while it is wrong to destroy property, it is equally unjust to target and arrest members of Langsai Thouna.
He said that the actions against them appeared to be politically motivated.
