Protestors-police stand-off over assault on scribe

Imphal, August 02 2024: Members of Khwairamband Ima Keithel Joint Coordinating Com mittee for Peace on Friday got into a stand-off with the police after the latter tried to prevent the Committee members from protesting against alleged excessive use of force on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and assault of a journalist during Thursday's protests.

On Friday around 1.30 pm, the Committee members, who are all women vendors, attempted to express their condemnation regarding the police crackdown on IDPs and assault of a journalist by an SI on Thursday.

As the members were trying to talk with the media, a large number of police personnel along with central forces arrived at the location and drove away the vendors, resulting in a long stand-off between the vendors and the police.

Later, Committee convenor H Binodini spoke to media persons and questioned the reason for such brutality on the people who are already suffering.

She condemned the police crackdown on IDPs on Thursday, and also said that any assault on media persons cannot be taken lightly.

She then demanded immediate strict action against the police personnel who assaulted the journalist, while urging against a repeat of such undesired actions in the future.
