Imphal, November 01 2024:
The dissolved JAC, formed in response connection with the controversial death of Naorem Ongbi Sanjita of Kakwa Naorem Leikai, has expressed disappointment over statements by mother and maternal relatives of the victim portraying the JAC in poor light.
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club, here, on Friday, JAC co-convenor Ch Ingenthaba expressed disappointment over statements made by Sanjita's mother and uncle regarding her death, observing that their comments have the potential to portray the JAC in poor light.
He stated that the issue had been resolved after the JAC and family members met with the chief minister to reach an agreement.
In their statement, Sanjita's mother and uncle claimed that her house at Kakwa Naorem Leikai is about 250 metres away from the national highway, expressing doubt on how the tear gas shells fired on the highway could possibly reach the residence.
In response posers of Sanjita's mother and uncle, Ingenthaba highlighted that during the incident involving Sanjita, there was an intense students' unrest and on-going protests.
The security forces used excessive force against the student community, firing tear gas shells even in residential pockets, causing distress to many, including the elderly, sick and children.
Such actions by the security forces were strongly condemned by the public, he elaborated, adding that the JAC had also attributed Sanjita's death to excessive use of force and urged the government to ensure that such acts do not recur.
He also questioned why Sanjita's maternal family did not mention any bruises on her face, which could indicate torture or an injury from an accident, when she was brought to the hospital prior to her death.
If this information had been shared with the doctors while recording history of the patient, relevant treatment could have been provided, opined the co-convenor.
Ingenthaba also pointed out that the post mortem report noted external injuries on some areas of her face, but bruises on the side of the eyes as claimed by Sanjita's mother and uncle were not mentioned in the report.
He also informed that Rs 1 lakh was given to the JAC by Sanjita's family in appreciation of the JAC's efforts on her behalf, with the funds received on October 13 .
The JAC has decided to hand over the amount to support village volunteers on November 5, he said.
