Imphal, March 01 2022:
BJP candidate from Langthabal assembly constituency MLA Karam Shyam has stated that he will file a complaint to the Election Commission of India (ECI) over attempts made for booth capturing and unleashing violence against BJP workers by opposing candidates and their supporters.
Addressing a press meet held at his residence at Lilong Chajing Mareinkhong on Tuesday, Karam Shyam contended that prior to commencement of the voting process, some candidates beat up a BJP election agent at polling station 20/4 Sorokhaibam Leikai.
On Monday also, a Congress worker named Laishram Gokeshore alias Giri assaulted a BJP agent just before commencement of the election at polling station 20/18 Kakwa Sofa Leirak along with threatening to burn down his house, alleged the MLA.
Karam Shyam continued that on hearing the news he immediately rushed to the spot and controlled the situation.
At that time, INC candidate's son started verbally abusing him, but he overlooked it and moved away so that the election can be held peacefully.
The former minister pledged to effectively eradicate poll-related violence deliberately created to confuse and intimidate electors in the AC and work to uphold the democratic principles in the constituency.
Praising people of Karam Makha Leikai for preventing attempt to capture booth at polling station 20/34 Karam Makha Leikai on Monday, Karam Shyam recalled that EVM got malfunctioned at the said polling station and the voting was stopped from 12 pm till 1:15 pm.
The voting resumed after a new.EVM was provided.
A candidate tried to capture the booth while complaining why the voting was allowed even after the official poll timing exceeded even though the polling officials were doing so for the lost time due to EVM malfunction.
This shows that the person does not know electoral process, he opined.
Karam Shyam further emphasised that the candidate must know that even after official timing of polling ends at 4 pm, voters present in the polling station premises can cast their votes.
He will lodge a complaint in this regard to the ECI, he reiterated.
