Johnstone fetes Space Day exhibition winners

Johnstone Higher Secondary School celebrated the achievements of its students who won first place at the National Space Day exhibition hosted by the Indian Institute of Information and Technology (IIIT) Mantripukhri.
The students were felicitated during the school assembly on Saturday.
IIIT Mantripukhri celebrated the National Space Day on Friday commemorating the historic landing of Chandrayaan-3 at the south pole of the moon.
An exhibition was also organised as part of the event, in which Naorem Arjun and Elex Chongtham won the first place for their robot model called 'Basic Salamander Robot Walk'.
Naorem Arjun is the son of N Hemanta and N Dhanee of Khoijuman Mamang Leikai.
Elex Chongtham is the son of Ch Somen and Ch Sumati of Khoijuman Mayai Leikai, informed a statement issued by the school authority.
Arjun and Elex Chongtham created the robot inspired by the salamander, a lizard species.
The robot is controlled via Wi-Fi through an ESP-2 circuit and can be operated using a smartphone, allowing it to move in any direction and stand upright.
Arjun explained that the current model is primarily for entertainment but has potential applications in defence, such as bomb detection and disposal, by incorporating additional components and AI modules.
The salamander-inspired design allows the robot to crawl easily up steep slopes, navigate narrow spaces, and manoeuvre through deep holes.
Another student, Nandalal Thiyam, also showcased his robot "JON-17" made from electronic waste materials, at the exhibition.
Nandalal's robot earned him recognition at previous science fairs, including the Best Individual Exhibit at the Eastern India Science Fair in 2018 and first place at the 38th State Level Science, Mathematics, and Environment Exhibition in 2017.Nandalal is the son of Th Ishorchand and Th Chaobi of Balaram Khul, Nambol.
The school principal expressed pride of its students' achievements and encouraged them to continue pursuing excellence in science and technology, the statement added.
