Ministry upgrades RIMS Sports Medicine Department

Imphal, May 21 2024: In a significant development for sports healthcare, the department of sports medicine at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, has been declared a full-fledged department.

This decision was approved during the 51st meeting of the executive council chaired by the secretary (ministry of health) on March 8, 2024, at Nirman Bhavan, New Delhi whereas an official notification was issued by the RIMS director on May 20 .

A statement issued by the department informed that initially established in 2020 as a flagship project of the Ministry of Youth Sports, the department of sports medicine at RIMS is one of only eight such departments in the country offering MD course in sports medicine.

Notably, it is the only department under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare imparting this specialised education.

Since its inception, the department has admitted many postgraduate students from across India, producing its first successful MD graduate in June 2023.Building on this success, a PhD programme in sports medicine is set to commence later this month.

The department is also poised to offer high-performance sports sciences facilities in an upcoming building.

Given its critical role in enhancing sporting performance, the department is aiming to become a Centre of Excellence in sports medicine, with continued support from the state government, the statement added.
