Imphal, May 20 2021:
Expressing concern over the problems being faced by Christians in the state regarding burial site of Covid patients, Tipaimukh MLA Dr Chaltonlian Amo on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren requesting to provide a proper site for developing a cemetery of Christians in Imphal.
In the memorandum, the Congress MLA pointed out that there are more than 2 lakhs population of Christians belonging to different communities including Tribals, Meeteis, Nepalese, Bengalis, etc., in Imphal.
In the prevailing Covid 19 pandemic crisis, the number of people getting infected and deceased has increased in spite of maximum effort rendered by the Health department and frontline workers under the Government of Manipur, the MLA said.
Stating that locals residing near Christian cemetery, Chingmeirong did not allow burying of bodies of Covid-19 victims in the cemetery, the MLA pointed out that this has compelled the bereaved families to take the corpses to their respective villages even to the most interior and remote hill areas where there are no proper road communications and health facilities.
Moreover, the people faced transportation problem due to non-availability of vehicle due to lockdown imposed for containing the virus.
As nobody could say how long the dreaded pandemic will continue and how many people will die in this pandemic, Dr Chaltonlein Amo informed that three places outside the city had been identified by the Christian leaders in consultation with the Christian MLAs who are willing to donate for payment of the cost to the land owner.
But the people of the local area people never allowed sale of the land.
So, he urged the state government to arrange for providing an appropriate place/site with financial help for Christian cemetery to bury those who died due to Covid-19 or other natural causes.
