Assam minister urged to implement Meetei Mayek

A delegation comprising representatives of different Manipuri and Manipuri Muslim organisations of Assam under the banner of Manipuri Language Protection Coordination Committee (MLPC), a conglomerate of CSOs of Manipuri people living in Assam, met Assam education minister Dr Ranoj Pegu on Thursday and submitted a memorandum, urging for implementation of the Manipur government-approved Meetei Mayek (Manipuri script) in education institutions in Assam.
Apart from submitting the memorandum, the delegation also had a thorough discussion on implementation of Meetei Mayek in Assam with minister Dr Ranoj Pegu.
Lakhipur MLA Kausik Rai was also present during the discussion held at the conference hall of Assam Secretariat, Block B.After the thorough discussion, minister Dr Ranoj Pegu raised several questions and enquired up to which class should Meetei Mayek be included as a subject as and when the script is implemented in Assam.
In the second question, he raised as to when will Manipuri students begin studying regional language namely Assamese/ Bengali while highlighting importance of regional language in applying for jobs in Assam.
Expressing regret about diminishing Manipuri medium schools in Assam, the minister suggested the delegation to discuss the matter thoroughly with experts and CSOs to improve Manipuri medium schools in the state.
He then appealed to the delegation to take up next course of action after thorough discussion with stakeholders including CSOs as the matter is for the future generations to come.
The delegation included JAC for Safeguard of Indigenous Manipuri Peoples of Assam chairman Arambam Nandababu, Meetei Pukai Lup president Yumnam Nadiachand, AAMSU general secretary Kababram Bikramjit, Assam Manipuri Muslim Youth Front president Jamir Hussain, Abdul Salam of Guwahati Manipuri Muslim Welfare Society, AAMSU president Ngasekpam Sana-hal, Manipuri Peoples Front president Yengkhom Upendra, Naharol Khorirol Shillup vice president Laisungbam Rabindra, Seram Herajit of MYFA, Manipuri Peoples Front general secretary Laisungbam Ingngangamba, Ichema editor Phuritsabam Biramani and ex-AAMSU leader Meisnam Bhagat.
