Indigenous items shine at Mera Houchongba fair

The 7-day Mera Houchongba festive fair organised by District Handloom & Textiles, Imphal East under the aegis of the Directorate of Handloom & Textiles, got underway at GM hall, here on Monday.
Weavers Service Centre, Imphal deputy director Priyadarshi Daripa, who attended the inauguration function of the festive fair as chief guest, said the demand in other states and abroad for indigenous handloom and handicraft products of Manipur has been on the rise.
In view of the increasing demand, weavers and artisans of the state must focus on national and international markets rather than simply eyeing local market, she said, encouraging weavers and artisans of the state to take part in national-level handloom fairs.
She thanked the organiser for conducting the fair in the heart of Imphal and exuded hope that the fair would attract healthy number of buyers and visitors.
The opening function of the fair was also attended by Imphal East handloom project manager Y Ashalata as president and Ethno Heritage Council president Y Surjitkumar, Manipur Handloom & Handicraft Development Corporation Limited general manager (administration) Th Basanta and national and Shanta Kabir awardee W Shaya as guests of honour.
In his speech, Th Basanta said Mera Houchongba festive fair is a calendar event of the directorate and expressed hope that the fair would create opportunities for weavers and artisans from both hills and valley of the state to showcase their products.
He remarked that the designs and patterns of handloom and handicraft products of state weavers and artisans are gaining popularity.
Taking cognizance of this, Basanta informed that the corporation will also organise a similar fair at Panthoibi Arcade, Wangkhei in December this year.
