Imphal, January 25 2023:
A one-day workshop on 'Millets on the Onset of International Year of Millets' was organised by the staff of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre under the sponsorship of NABARD, at their Lamphelpat Research Complex, here, on Wednesday.
The workshop was attended by Agriculture commissioner Rk Dinesh; CAU director of instruction Dr SB Singh; Agriculture director N Gojen dro Singh; NABARD Manipur Regional Office Lamphelpat general manager N Guite; and ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre joint director I Meghachandra Singh as presidium members, along other district officers and KVKs in the state.
Speaking on the occasion, I Meghachandra explained about the benefits of con -suming millets, adding that millets are grown or found in abundance in the northeast, particularly in Manipur but most go to waste due to non - consumption.
While pointing out different food crops grown in the hills are yet to reach the commercial scale, he informed the gathering that in 2018, the Government took up a proposal for a National Mil let Programme, which was brought to the attention of the UN and since then, the International Year of Millet is being observed.
Millets are easy to plant and cultivate, requiring minimum amount of water but these crops provide various health benefits.
Thus, the workshop was organised with the objective to encourage farmers to plant millets, which could also assist in in creasing their income, he said.
