Imphal, December 22 2021:
As part of the 16 days activism on gender-based violence in Manipur, Women Action for Development (WAD) conducted a consultative meet on gender-based violence at Sangai hall of Hotel Imphal, here on Wednesday.
Retired district and sessions judge A Noutuneshori, who took part in the consultative meet, stressed the need for bifurcation of police in maintaining law & order and for tackling crime against women and children and other cases so as prevent piling up of pending cases.
During the consultative meet, WAD also presented its annual best journalist award and promising awards.
The best journalist award was presented to Impact TV sub editor Usham Joyshree while promising awards were given to Ngangom Suraj of Sanaleibak, Sapam Aruna of Sangai Express and Imphal Free Press reporter Babie Shrine.
Best journalist award carries Rs 30,000 cash and a citation while promising awards carry Rs 10,000 in cash and a citation each.
In her speech, A Noutuneshori also called for a separate investigation police officer to look after different crimes happening in the state as utilisation of IO in VVIP duty and maintenance of law & order delays investigation of cases due to time constraint.
This is due to lack of manpower and hence it is of utmost necessity to keep separate police for tackling law & order and for investigation, she observed.
Regarding the meet, WAD secretary Mangsatabam Sobita said that awareness and poster campaign on crime against women, fact finding and other cases are going on to make people aware but crime against women continues even from the foetus.
Some people even say that crime against women increases when more awareness programmes are conducted, she noted and stressed the need for sending more women representatives to the legislative assembly.
SDPO Luxmi Thingbaijam, social worker Kh Jeevanmala and lecturer Priyadarshini Gangte of SK Women College also attended the meet as presidium members.
A video compilation on activities of WAD in coordination with public was also screened at the meet.
