Imphal, November 22 2021:
The election committee of ex-MtA Okram Henry has refuted the allegations levelled against Henry of stopping women on their way to attend Ningol Chakkouba event organised by Wangkhei MLA Y Erabot.
Speaking to the media, election committee chairman Maibon Phaomei recounted that Okram Henry along with his escort went to offer prayer to Yumjao Lairembi in Chingmeirong Lei Ingkhol on Sunday.
As he approached the area, a bus full of women came from the opposite direction to purportedly attend Ningol Chakkouba event organised by MLA Y Erabot.
As the road was narrow and moving backward en-route to the shrine is considered ominous, the bus was asked to reverse.
It created a misunderstanding but Henry approached the sacred place on foot.
Maintaining that there was no attempt to stop the women from attending the event, Maibon Phaomei urged all concerned not to make false claim and draw political mileage out of non-issue.
Besides, Erabot was not there and he was blindly believing his workers without understanding the actual event that took place, he added.
Wahengbam Memton, a local resident who was in the bus at the time of the incident, said that she went to attend the Ningol Chakkouba event after she got the invitation.
There was some mild argument over accessing the narrow road.
At first, she was not aware that the vehicles from other side belong to Henry but she knew that they were coming to offer prayer to Yumjao Lairembi.
There was no incident of Henry or any of his men stopping the bus, she said.
