Imphal, May 20 2021:
Pointing out that many newspaper subscribers have not yet paid the monthly bills, Hawker Associations have urged the subscribers to clear their pending liabilities in time so as to reduce the problems faced by the newspaper distributors during this trying time of Covid-19 second wave.
A joint release issued by Thoubal District Newspaper Hawkers' Association and All Mayang Imphal Newspaper Hawker's Union said that when the distributors (hawkers) visit houses of the subscribers to collect the pending bills, some of the subscribers did not even come out.
This has created a lot of problems in maintaining their families as they need to buy newspapers on a daily basis from print media houses for distribution among the subscribers.
They have been living on the small commission they get from selling the newspapers, the release stated, while reiterating the subscribers to clear their pending monthly bills in time.
Maintaining that many hawkers have changed their profession amidst the trying times of Covid-19 pandemic as they could not sustain their families, the release described as unfortunate that no initiatives for encouraging the hawkers, who have been distributing newspapers fearlessly, have been taken up by the government.
If all the hawkers stop delivering newspapers, then it would not be possible to make people aware about the schemes and developmental programmes taken up by the government for the people.
Moreover, media houses will be of no use if there is no hawker, it contended.
Seeking the attention of the government, the release urged for taking up special schemes for the welfare of hawkers so as to ensure continuation of their service in the state.
The hawkers further reiterated their long pending demand to the publishers of print media houses for taking up policies for the welfare of the hawkers.
