Imphal, May 15 2022:
Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has demanded authorities concerned to appoint a professor who fulfils the requisite criteria as dean of Students' Welfare of Manipur University.
In a release, DESAM secretary (education) Thounaojam Somol Luwang pointed out that as per the Manipur University ordinance, the dean of students' welfare should be appointed from among the professors of the varsity.
Contrary to the existing criteria, an associate professor has been appointed as the dean, thus violating the MU ordinance, the secretary said asked authority concerned to clarify in this regard in public interest.
On the other-hand, the Alliance lamented failure of the MU authority to release the names of students who are eligible and shortlisted to get hostel facility even after half a year of commencement of the academic session.
Such callousness has compounded financial position of students from tariff places as they are facing serious inconveniences due to sharp increase in rate of transportation.
As such, there is no meaning of having Dean of Students' Welfare, he pointed out.
Somol further said that amidst the non-declaration of names of selected student hostellers, non-bonafide students are putting up in the hostels.
There were also instances where some non-bonafide students staying in hostels were detained in police custody because of fighting.
All the aforementioned issues are directly or indirectly related to the appointment of dean by violating rules' and regulation of the ordinance, the secretary observed and reiterated that a professor should be appointed as dean of Students' Welfare by following the RR of MU ordinance.
