Senapti, January 07 2025:
The Poumai Thounii festival of the Poumai Naga tribe was celebrated on January 6, at the office premises of Poumai Naga Union (PNU) in Senapati.
Traditionally celebrated on January 5, this year's event was postponed from its usual grand celebration as it fell on the first Sunday of the year, a day significant for prayer and reflection in the Christian faith.
The festival derives its name from "Thouniikhou," the first month of the year, and translates to "new year festival" or "festival of dawn".
It is traditionally celebrated after the harvest season, as an occasion for thanksgiving to the creator for good harvest and good health.

The decision to postpone a larger celebration reflects the PNU's commitment to cultural preservation while accommodating the community's spiritual practices.
PNU president RB Pani, SDSA general secretary Kho Washington, and PNWU president P Delilah Pao spoke on the occasion.
They highlighted the day's importance as a moment of unity and preparation for the future, emphasising the need to promote and protect the Poumai Naga heritage while fostering community growth.
The PNU president also announced plans for a grand celebration in 2027 and urged community members to support collective progress.
Poumai Naga Catholic Me president Ng Dihe Daniel blessed the day with a special prayer.
Former PNU leaders, former ADC members, student leaders, women leaders and other dignitaries attended the event.
