Student bodies suspend proposed agitation

The proposed agitation by the four student bodies in Jiribam aimed at demanding the relocation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from educational institutions to more suitable locations and improving educational opportunities for students, has been called off.
Addressing media persons in this regard at the KSA District Council Jiribam office, on Saturday, KSA, District Council Jiribam president Kh Somorjit said that following the four student bodies in Jiribam namely MSF, DESAM, KSA and another student body made an appeal to the DC Jiribam to relocate the IDPs, who are presently housed at Chingdong Leikai Upper Primary School and Sorok Atingbi High School, to a more suitable location by providing adequate security arrangement and to enable the students to resume their classes by August 1.In response, the DC has assured that the IDPs sheltered at Sorok Atingbi High School will be shifted at a suitable place and the school will be reopened.
Additionally, the DC has also assured that arrangements would be made soon to facilitate the return of IDPs from Chingdong Leikai Upper Primary School to their homes.
Consequently, the four student bodies have resolved to suspend their planned agitation for the time being, he added.
Somorjit also said that as the four student bodies had already appealed to the teachers of all schools, who have taken leave, to join the school by August 1, it would their sole responsibility if they are found absent from the school during inspection by the student bodies.
Moreover, he also urged the authority concerned to fill the shortage of teaching and non-teaching staff of the schools in Jiribam.
The four student bodies also condemned the action of the state forces towards the IDPs during a rally in Akampat on August 1 .
