Imphal, December 02 2024:
The state is brimming with leaders, yet public dissatisfaction over perceived incompetence of the leaders persists, said Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) coordinator Thokchom Somorendro.
He was attending a public meeting organised by Lousangkhong Development Committee (LDC), Imphal East, on Monday.
Somorendro highlighted that women have historically played a pivotal role in safeguarding Manipur's identity and integrity.
He pointed out that after the 1891 Anglo-Manipuri War, the male members of society were unable to fight openly for the motherland with the same courage, prompting women to step forward.
He noted that Hijam Irabot also relied on women in his movement, and their significant contribution continues today amid the ongoing crisis.
He urged the public to recognise the current crisis terming it as a proxy war driven by India's geo-political dynamics among other issues.
Amid such a critical situation, some individuals are engaging in divisive politics to protect the interests of their MLAs or political parties, hindering efforts to foster unity.
The state's abundance of leaders, including those from Meira Paibi groups, civil society organisations, and other groups, has led to disarray, making it difficult to take a unified stand, Somorendro said.
Some have even expressed the need for a unifying figure who can guide and coordinate the various leaders effectively.
He stressed the importance of mothers (Meira Paibi), in cementing the fractured society and called for an end to political agendas, urging everyone to focus on building unity.
LDC president Ningombam Kalachand, secretary Kharibam Binoi, Lousangkhong Meira Paibi Lup president Sagolsem Chaoba Leima, and secretary Ningombam Memma also attended the meeting as presidium members.
