At least two Assam Rifles jawans are reported to have been seriously injured when a powerful IED exploded beneath a convoy of the 5th AR at Patpal Lamkhai in Thoubal district this morning.
The proscribed underground outfit People Liberation Army has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The attack occurred at around 8 am this morning when a convoy of six vehicles belonging to 5th AR were moving toward Kakching along the NH 39.When the last vehicle in the convoy, a truck was just about to pass the Patpal Lamkhai site, a powerful blast occurred hurtling the vehicle off the road.
Two jawans were seriously injured in their chest, hand and face with bomb splinters.
Both have been evacuated to Leimakhong army hospital.
Reinforcement rushed in, and massive operation were carried out but no one was arrested.
Though a few persons were picked up and detained, they were later released.
Some residents and those who happened to be in the vicinity during the time were reportedly beaten.
Frightened local residents specially men fled their houses on apprehension and rumors that at least six army man have been killed and army will retaliate.
A spokesman of PLA, claiming responsibility for the action said over the telephone that at least one jawan died on the spot while another was seriously injured.
