Sit-in flays oppression against women, transgenders of State

In protest against the alleged oppression of women and transgender of the State, several women from different walks of life and civil organisations staged a sit-in-protest today at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai community hall.
The protest demonstration was organised by Manipur Gender Justice Collective (MAGJC) .
Speaking to media persons, Shreema Ningombam, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Nambol L Shanoi College expressed grave concern over the growing trend of symbolic violence committed against women and transgender groups of the State .
She said that they are against any form of violence or oppression upon any groups or individuals regardless of gender difference .
She asserted that it is high time to bring a solution to prevent atrocities meted out to any groups or individuals .
She also expressed unhappiness over the hardening views on dresses wear by women and transgender .
People need to change their perception on discussing the matter.
Dress will go on changing with the changing of time.
However, there should be appropriate time and place for wearing different dresses, she observed .
Shreema opined that outfits wear by an individual should not be made an issue unless it does not create harm to the dignity of the person and to the society .
She also called for peaceful negotiations if any women and transgender happens to wear dresses in a harmful manner .
Regretting the concerned authority's failure to take up appropriate measures to curb the growing gender discrimination, she noted that all sections of the society, including media, academicians and the authorities concerned need to create awareness on gender justice and gender equality .
Placards inscribed with slogans "Gender equality is not women issue, it's human issue", "Let us protect human rights, transgender are also human", "Transgender are also the citizens of the State", "I have the right to decide who I want to be and what I want to wear" etc were displayed at the protest site.
