Imphal, May 29 2024:
Even as continuous downpour due to cyclone Remal continued to wreak havoc in Manipur for the second day, around 700 flood-hit victims have been rescued and evacuated to safe locations.
The victims were rescued by personnel of Manipur Fire Service, NDRF, SDRF and the Army.
The rescue operations were carried out since yesterday night after water from Imphal River inundated and flooded several pockets of Imphal.
The rescue operations were conducted across Kairang, Keikol, Nilakuthi, Koirengei Mayai Leikai, Maibakhun, Lairikyengbam Leikai, Laipham Khunou, Ahallup, Chingmeirong, Nagaram, Tangkhul Avenue and Dewlahland.
The teams rescued people including babies and elderly persons from hospitals and the localities.
While almost all the roads and localities in the Imphal area have been flooded, efforts were on in many places to reinforce and strengthen the banks of Imphal River and Nambul River.
To control water level, one of six gates of Pukhao Dolaithabi Dam in Khundrakpam AC has been opened to discharge excess water to Iril River.
After the gate was opened, the level of water subsided from 803.10 metre to 801.10 metres at around 12.30 pm, said sources.
While Pukhao region is relatively safe, Yumnam, Sambei, Chingkhu and Tangkham near Kongba River have been inundated with water.
