Imphal, August 27 2020:
The 55th Hunger Marchers' Day was observed today organised by the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) at Pishum Chingamacha in Imphal West.
However, the formal function was held at AMSU office inside DM College Campus in a scaled down manner due to the pandemic.
A patriotic songs album titled 'Rhythms of Unity volume-II' was released during the function.
The function was attended by former president of AMSU Lourembam Dilip Meitei, AMSU president Peter Laishram, AMSU advisor Thokchom Suresh and Human Rights Alert executive director Babloo Loitongbam as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking at the function, Dilip Meitei said the students' uprising of 27 August 1965 was the first biggest movement against the injustices meted out by the Government in the post-merger period in Manipur history.
Peter Laishram said the frequent reports of drug seizures in the State even during lockdown is pointing towards the involvement of powerful and well-connected individuals in drug smuggling.
Claiming that continuous attempts are being made to take away the resources of the land secretly, he appealed to the people to understand the issue and face it together.
Babloo Loitongbam said people need to face the present issues in the State like drug menace and COVID-19 pandemic together for the sake of future generation and also to bring change for a better tomorrow.
Students and mothers who fought together against the artificial food scarcity in 1965 saved the present generation.
Likewise, the present generation should also face the drug menace and COVID pandemic together in the interest of future generations, he said.
It may be mentioned here that the uprising of August 27, 1965 was against the artificial famine.
Nabakumar, Nilamani and Pramodini were killed on the spot during police firing on that day.
Many others were also severely injured in police beating.
One of the injured, Laishram Chaobal, later died on September 26.AMSU was formed the next day after the incident where three people were killed in police firing.
AMSU has been observing the day ever since.
