AERB seals X-Ray room at RIMS

A three member team of Atomic Energy Regulation Board (AERB) today sealed one X ray facility room of RIMS for violating Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules 2004 and issued warning notices to the dental college, cardiac catheterization laboratory and another X-ray room located at Department of Radio-Diagnosis of the hospital to obtain necessary license and registration from AERB within a month.
The officials inspected the the machinery installed at the department of Radio-diagnosis, dental college and cardiac catheterization laboratory of RIMS from 11 am onwards.
Speaking to media persons later, an official of AERB, Pradip Kumar said that a large number of X-ray machines are being operated in the country without obtaining the necessary license from AERB.
Continuing that registering the facilities with AERB and obtaining license are mandatory for ensuring safety of medical practitioners, operators and patients, he added that unauthorized use of X-ray machine is punishable under Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules 2004.The inspecting team first inspected the CT scan room, followed by X ray rooms and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.
While inspecting the RIMS X-ray room along with the HoD of Radio-diagnosis, RIMS, it was found that the machinery was used without fulfilling the necessary criteria for operation.
The technicians too were not wearing their apron and their dosimeter were out of validity.
After the inspection, the officials of AERB held a meeting at the office of RIMS Director, Professor A Shanta with Medical Superintendent, Ch Arunkumar and HoD Radio-Diagnosis RIMS, Dr A Meenakumari.
Speaking to media persons, Ch Arun assured that necessary steps will be taken up in a short period of time to obtain license from AERB.
He also said that a departmental enquiry will be initiated to look after the matter.
Yesterday, AERB team inspected 4 private hospitals namely Langol View, City Hospital, Imphal Hospital and Babina Diagnostic Centre and found only one of the hospitals complying with the regulatory requirements of AERB.
