Anaesthetic drugs used to perpetrate sexual crimes ?

Imphal, July 25 2013: A strong suspicion has been raised about some people using anaesthetic drugs in order to overpower women and girls, and perpetrate sexual crimes including rape.

Some victims of sexual crimes have disclosed that the men used anaesthetic drugs to make women and girls semi-conscious or submissive to their sexual advances.

Yet, the report is yet to be confirmed officially.

Little Flower student Lungnila Elizabeth was abducted on November 4, 2003 and she was found murdered on November 11 same year.

The abductors reportedly used anaesthetic drugs on the minor girl to make her incapable of shouting or crying so that they could take her anywhere with little difficulty.

Likewise, the two accused in the rape case of a TG Higher Secondary School student reportedly mixed soft drink with anaesthetic substances to perpetrate the crime.

The girl who was abducted by some people when she went to take admission form from Universal College, Yairipok, only to be abandoned late night said that she lost consciousness soon after her mouth and nose was covered with a handkerchief.

Despite all these cases, it is not clear what kind of anaesthetic substances were used in overpowering women or whether these substances are available in pharmacies.

Drug Inspector N Remotkumar told The Sangai Express that anaesthetic drugs are supplied by stockists to registered pharmacies and retail quality drug licence holders.

Anaesthetic drugs are sold only when they are prescribed by doctors.

There cannot be any lapses which allow anybody to abuse anaesthetic drugs, Remotkumar said.

One Anaesthetist working in a Government medial institute at Imphal said they have received reports about some criminals using anaesthetic drugs in committing sexual crimes elements using anaesthetic drugs in committing crimes against women.

But it cannot be established till date what kinds of anaesthetic substances were used or whether they were similar to the ones used in operation theatres.

Though anaesthetic drugs used in operation theatres have improved a lot, doctors still encounter difficulties in administering anaesthetic drugs to healthy babies.

The same difficulties can be overcome if the anaesthetic drugs used by criminal elements are identified, said the anaesthetist.

At present, Isoflurence and Sevoflurence brands of anaesthetic drugs are used in operations theatres.

They were introduced in the State less than five years back.

Earlier Chloroform.

Helothane and Ether were as anaesthetic drugs.

All these five brands of anaesthetic drugs are very costly and are unlikely to have been used by people in non-medical profession.
