Imphal, April 25 2021: Several organisations including four localities of Kongpal have now backed the Justice For Sanaton Athokpam's call for a 24 hour State-wide shutdown from 6 pm of April 26 .

Womenfolk of the four localities - Kongpal Chingangbam Leikai, Kongkham Leikai, Ningthoubung Leikai and Khaidem Leikai staged a mass sit-in protest today demanding justice for Sanaton Athokpam.

During the protest demonstration, the womenfolk formed a human chain and unanimously decided to support the call for Joykisan appeals for mass test, vaccination Notably, the JFSA had earlier threatened to impose the 24-hour State-wide total shutdown from 6 pm of April 26 to 6 pm of April 27 in case the Government fails to act on its demands.

The Justice For Sanaton Athokpam had demanded police to file an FIR and investigate the death of the medical student.

It had also demanded immediate suspension of the RIMS Director and Dean (Academics) and interrogation of the Warden of the hostel, where Sanaton was reportedly found hanging.

Further, the JFSA had stated that the Magisterial enquiry ordered to investigate the case has exhausted its stipulated time and as such, it should wrap up its investigation and submit the final report immediately.

The final report of the investigation should be disclosed to the JFSA and the family members of the deceased, it had said, also demanding identification of all involved in the case.

Meanwhile, supporting the JFSA, the womenfolk, during the sit-in today, said they will help enforce the 24 hours shutdown.

They blocked roads for some time and formed a human chain raising slogans for justice for Sanaton.

The sit-in protest was supported by the Industrious Students' Association, said the JFSA.

Meanwhile, organisations which are also backing the total shutdown call include Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM) and the All Manipur Tammi-Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup (Tammi-Chingmi).

It may be noted that Sanaton Athokpam was a 5th Semester MBBS student and he was reportedly found hanging with both hands tied behind inside his room at a RIMS hostel on March 15 .

In a Court recently, the police had stated that he died of asphyxia and it was a case of "suicide" .
